It was founded to replace the League of Nations following World War II and to prevent another conflict. When it was founded, the UN had 51 Member States; there are now 193. The goals of the United Nations are: 1. Keep world peace 2. Help countries get along 3. Improve living conditions for people all over the world and 4. Make the world a better place.

In 1953 the two words 'International' and 'Emergency' were dropped from the name, the name UNICEF remained. UNICEF’s main goal is to give ‘every child the chance to grow up healthy, happy and safe’.
